A teenage girl says that she was briefly tasked with caring for a crying baby while on board a flight.
In a post shared to Reddit, the anonymous 19-year-old writes: “I got a window seat for a 6 hour plane ride. I brought the essentials which was my playlist and headphones and I took my anxiety medication beforehand because I’m an extremely nervous/anxious flyer.”
Prior to takeoff, a woman with a baby sat next to the girl, in an aisle seat, with no one in the middle seat.

“I put my headphones on and knocked out almost immediately,” the poster continues. “I’m in deep sleep and I feel a hand on my shoulder, shaking me. I take my headphones off and hear her baby screaming.”
The post continues: “She tells me she has to go to the restroom and asks if I can hold her baby while she goes. I tell her ‘I can do that but idk how to hold a baby either?’ (Im 19, I haven’t experienced taking care of a baby before).”
The woman then “mumbled something” before handing the baby to the 19-year-old and walking to the bathroom.
“I’m trying to comfort her baby but he’s just screaming,” the poster writes. “I feel bad. The mom comes back and then reprimanded me for not supporting her baby’s head. I tell her I’m sorry.”
Then, the woman got the flight attendant involved, telling the flight attendant the girl had not properly cared for the child while she was in the restroom, the teen writes.

“The attendant is also kinda like, ‘what do you want me to do,’ ” she continues. “The mom proceeds to take photos of me (DONT KNOW WHY?!). I put my headphones back on. When the plane lands, she accuses me of hating babies and that I put my headphones on because I found her baby annoying and that I ‘mom shamed’ her.”
The post adds: “She seems to think I held her baby that way to be mean but I just didn’t know how?!”

Many other moms have weighed in on the situation, taking to the comments to say the mom on the airplane should have chosen someone else to hold her baby, or asked a flight attendant for help.
“This Mom made a poor decision,” wrote one. “I would’ve asked a flight attendant before asking the sleeping teenager next to me.”
Added another: “What?! You were literally woken up and handed a baby like it’s a bag of chips or something. Totally not cool on her part, especially when you told her you weren’t experienced. You did your best, headphones back on and vibe check out!”
