‘Another rematch no fans asked for:’ Fans react to Justin Gaethje vs. Rafael Fiziev 2, new fight announcements

[ad_1]

Justin Gaethje and Rafael Fiziev meet in the new co-main event of UFC 313. But should another lightweight contender have gotten the call?

Following the announcement that Dan Hooker was forced to withdraw from his scheduled fight with Gaethje, Fiziev has been brought in to take on “The Highlight” in a rematch of their UFC 286 encounter that Gaethje won via majority decision. That was a Fight of the Night-winning contest and the stylistic matchup looks great on paper, but fans are mixed on whether running it back was the best option or if someone else deserved the opportunity.

Two other major matchups were announced Wednesday, with featherweight knockout artist Jean Silva getting his wish and fighting Bryce Mitchell at UFC 314, and light heavyweight contenders Jamahal Hill and Khalil Rountree Jr. settling unfinished business in the main event of UFC Kansas City.

Check out reader reactions to Gaethje vs. Fiziev 2 and the other new fights below.

Oh, goody! ANOTHER rematch no fans asked for.

Top heavy card just got even more top heavy.

SexyFatGuy

Glad to see this.

I had figured JG wasn’t going to fight cuz he’s said in the past he doesn’t like short notice fights. I’m wrong on about 50% of my predictions. Glad to be wrong this time too.

Along with the Silva/Mitchell announcement, the UFC is moving right along.

TheSesameStreetCount

This is a pretty nasty return fight for both of them, but particularly Fiziev I think

Flamesting

Better fight than the original.

Scot_McCreight_

much tougher matchup for Gaethje IMO….I love The Highlight’s chances against Hooker and will still pick him to win against Godzilla but this will be a big ask…..respect to JG for just being him and being willing to fight anyone, anytime, anywhere….dig that dude so much.

Best possible scenario under the circumstances. I wanted to see the Hooker fight but Fiziev is defintely the more dangerous fight. Thankfully we get this rematch instead of Gamrot or Moicano.

Barnabus Dupree

That first fight was fire, but damn, that’s a tough re-entry for Fiziev coming off an ACL tear, 18 months out, on two weeks notice? I don’t see how he wins under those circumstances, but he’s an absolute G for stepping up.

You know what would be stupidly fun fight? Topuria vs Fiziev! I always thought Fiziev should have dropped down a weight class, so a LW fight with the FW champ moving up would be a burner.

Fun question for the group: How much would the UFC have to pay you to take a short notice fight at UFC 313 against Justin Gaethje?

Jean Silva gets his wish with Bryce Mitchell fight booked for UFC 314 in April

stippenstoh

Don’t let Silva’s flat-footed stance fool you, he seems to have a flat rate on fight ending punches. His flatmate reported he regularly knocked out bullies on campus back when he studied astronomy. Some people say he can’t stop takedowns but that’s a flat-out lie. He is well rounded. So far he didn’t fall flat on producing so I think he flattens out Bryce in the first…round.

Greatknightofights7

Super excited for this one! This is the second best option after Bryce just being cut but I think we all knew that wasn’t going to happen.

Nicolas Caged

I like it! Silva’s Star will rise a lot higher after he takes out Nutzi Mitchell.

Who’s got two thumbs (on his chest) and getting KTFO?

EAST_TIIIME!!!

Never been so easy rooting for Khalil.

Can’t wait to see Hill slept again

Will be interesting to see if Jamahall Hall’s pride wants some more sweet dreams napping or if he’s going to attempt to wrassle his way to a lay and pray split decison. This was the fight to make either way, UFC gets one right once in awhile.
