It’s Not Just Gigan, Godzilla Is Ready to Revisit Some of Its Greatest Villains in 2025

[ad_1]

The Godzilla franchise is ready to revisit a host of classic villains in 2025, including Gigan. IDW, who currently holds the right to produce comics based on the King of Monsters, is set to release Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens, a new miniseries that brings to a conclusion the publisher’s Here There Be Dragons trilogy, and fans can expect to see the kaiju’s opponents from outer space.

Frank Tieri has written the other entries in the Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons trilogy.

The official Godzilla website had a first look at Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens #1, which will be written by Frank Tieri and drawn by Angel Hernandez. Here There Be Aliens is the final part of a trilogy that began with Here There Be Dragons and continued through The Sons of Giants. Each one transported Godzilla into different timeframes and historical periods.

As to what fans can expect from Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens, IDW’s solicitation offers some hints:

GODZILLA: HERE THERE BE ALIENS is both a fully standalone limited series and the epic conclusion to the Eisner-nominated GODZILLA: HERE THERE BE DRAGONS trilogy! Brought to us by veteran scribe Frank Tieri (Wolverine, Jughead: The Hunger) and new series artist Angel Hernandez (STAR TREK). It’s the middle of the 20th century, and Americans everywhere are terrified by the strange lights hovering above them in the night sky…and they should be. These UFOs are actually the Xilien invasion force! Revealed to have already been on Earth during the events of Here There Be Dragons: Sons of Giants, the Xiliens have been attempting to destabilize the planet with the help of kaiju from outer space! With the aliens’ claws deep inside the U.S. government, will our rogue operatives manage to band together to save humanity?

The Xiliens, mentioned in the solicitation, are no strangers to the franchise, having appeared in two films.

Godzilla’s Space-Based Villains Are Some of His Best

Kaiju Like King Ghidorah and Gigan Are Some of His Most Visually Striking Foes

Godzilla’s lore has been constantly changing and evolving since his debut in 1954. Originally conceived as a commentary on the proliferation of atomic weapons, Godzilla would in time become something of a hero, protecting the Earth from a variety of threats, such as King Ghidorah and Gigan. Both of these kaiju originated beyond Earth, in outer space. Gigan, who first appeared in 1972’s Godzilla vs Gigan, was a cybernetic kaiju sent by aliens to destroy Earth, but ran afoul of Godzilla. King Ghiodrah, another space-based kaiju, is one of Godzilla’s most iconic villains.

While some purists cried foul over the Godzilla franchise’s transformation into “kiddie fare,” the introduction of aliens into the mix gave the films their charm.

While some purists cried foul over the Godzilla franchise’s transformation into “kiddie fare,” the introduction of aliens into the mix gave the films their charm. The kaiju from outer space were some of Godzilla’s most interesting foes, both from a story and design standpoint. As Godzilla became a good guy, newer and scarier villains were needed. Earth-based kaiju, such as the flying Rodan, were memorable foes, but King Ghidorah, Space Godzilla and Gigan stood above the rest. These galactic kaiju were outsiders to Earth, and their character designs reflected this idea, especially Ghidorah with his three heads.

Like any great pop culture franchise, Godzilla can change and adapt to times and tastes, and IDW’s Here There Be Aliens is proof. The book, and the trilogy it ends, has shown that Godzilla can work in any timeframe and context, in this case the Cold War. That era saw an uptick in UFO sightings, and stories of bug-eyed monsters were all the rage at the time. Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens #1 taps into this moment in history, pitting the King of Monsters against his best alien threats, including KIng Ghidorah and Gigan.
