Release For It Prequel Series Welcome To Derry Clarified In New Update Following Delay Rumors

It: Welcome To Derry

gets its release window confirmed in a new report following rumors of a delay. Following the success of It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019), the world of Stephen King’s hit horror franchise is set to return with a new HBO show. Hailing from It movies director Andy Muschietti and co-showrunners Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Cane, the It: Welcome to Derry story chronicles horrifying events in the eponymous town in the 1960s. Though originally slated for release in 2025, recent rumors have suggested the show was bumped to 2026.

A new report from TVLine now sets the record straight on when audiences can expect to see It: Welcome to Derry. According to the publication, rumors suggesting the series will release in 2026 are incorrect. HBO is said to have confirmed with TVLine that the prequel is still set to premiere at some point this year.

What It: Welcome To Derry’s Release Window Means For The Show

Filming Wrap & Potential Release Timeline Explained

There’s been no official trailer for It: Welcome to Derry just yet, but HBO has shared some early footage for the show, providing a first look at some of the show’s younger characters and teasing a terrifying ride. Fuchs confirmed on his Instagram account that filming wrapped on the series’ nine episodes in August 2024. Effects-heavy shows can have very long post-production pipelines, however, which could explain why no full-length trailer has been released.

It: Welcome To Derry All But Guarantees One Of Pennywise’s Wildest Forms

New images from the upcoming prequel series It: Welcome to Derry basically confirms that Pennywise will appear in one of his wildest forms.

Bringing Skarsgård’s terrifying Pennywise the Clown to life does require some CGI, as was seen in the two movies. Plus, the show’s 1960s setting could also increase the effects work required in terms of creating a convincing backdrop for the story. Since there’s been very little in the way of promotion for the show so far this year, a release this summer or in the latter half of 2025 now seems most likely. Both of the It movies were released in September, and the show could follow this same pattern.

Our Take On It: Welcome To Derry’s Release Window

Will Audiences Tune In?

A child covered in blood and goo in It Welcome to Derry

Both of the It movies were well-received critically, and they were also major successes at the box office. It’s not clear how much of an appetite there is for an HBO show set in this world with all new characters, but the return of Skarsgård’s Pennywise as part of the Welcome to Derry cast is sure to be an audience draw.

The It: Welcome to Derry cast also features Jovan Adepo, Taylour Paige, James Remar, Madeleine Stowe, Peter Outerbridge, Tyner Rushing, Kimberly Guerrero, and Chris Chalk, among others.

A release in September would mean a trailer will probably arrive several months from now. With Andy and Barbara Muschietti playing a key role in developing the show, in addition to Andy serving as the director of multiple episodes, it should feel pretty similar to the movies, but this won’t become clear until more footage is actually revealed. Hopefully, more It: Welcome to Derry news will arrive in the near future.
