After French President Emmanuel Macron gathered a dozen European and NATO leaders around the table on Monday to discuss the situation in Ukraine, he organized a new meeting on Wednesday.
This time, Belgium, Luxembourg, Romania, Canada, the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania), Cyprus, Finland, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Ireland, Iceland, Portugal, Sweden, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic participated in the conversation. Most leaders participated via videoconference, only the Romanian President Ilie Bolojan and the Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden traveled to Paris.
The diplomatic maneuvers surrounding the war in Ukraine have accelerated after U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that he wants to quickly start negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Moreover, he seems not to involve the Europeans in the negotiations for the time being, even though he seems to want to pass on the responsibility for Ukraine’s future security to them.
