“I’ve never seen a movie that really portrays an autistic child’s kind of point of view,” Peter explained. “It’s always somebody else’s view of them, but to take it and have part of this film be through his eyes, you get to put their goggles on and see how they experience things. There’s such beauty, purity, innocence and light.”
When it comes to empathizing with Austin’s dad, the Twilight alum—who is also dad to daughters Luca, 27, Lola, 22, and Fiona, 18, whom he shares with ex-wife Jennie Garth—added, “It’s a parent’s struggle, too. It’s hard enough raising a child alone.”
For his own part, Peter is grateful to have a village of support, including the What I Like About You alum. Most recently, when the Los Angeles wildfires ravaged the area and forced Jennie and her husband Dave Abrams to evacuate, they stayed at Peter and Lily’s home.
“I love her,” he told E!. “She’s the mother of my kids. I consider her a friend. I consider her husband a friend.”
