Paris – The defense effort that will be necessary in Europe to accompany a possible peace in Ukraine “will have consequences for our public finances,” warned the French government’s spokesperson Sophie Primas, announcing a debate in Parliament “early March.”
“The Prime Minister will organize a debate in early March in Parliament under Article 50-1 of the Constitution on the consequences of this geopolitical context for our country,” Sophie Primas explained at the end of the Council of Ministers. She specified that this debate “in a moment of gravity” will not lead to a vote.
“The European awakening involves an increase in military spending that we have started in France,” she specified, recalling that the government “advocates for the creation of a European-scale borrowing capacity for common investments.”
It is also necessary to “support our own defense industry by establishing a true European preference in our defense equipment purchases,” reiterated the spokesperson. (February 19, 2025)
