What to do if you get sick while traveling?

What to do if you get sick while traveling? This is a fear that we all have and let’s face it, this fear has been increased and even exaggerated since the pandemic. Now whenever, we travel, especially solo, we take many precautions.
There is so much preparation before we travel. But, still, we may catch a virus or a cold, we have indigestion, or an extreme headache, or an unbearable toothache… Well, what I am saying is that there is so much that is unfortunately beyond our control.
What to do if you get sick while traveling? [Be mentally prepared]
Now if something like this happens, you should be prepared. You should act and most importantly, you should know how to act. But, the first thing I believe is crucial is the need to prepare yourself mentally. Anything can happen to anyone. Not because you are fit and fine, you consume fruits regularly, you practice sports, you do yoga – any health related activities or routines that you practice – that you are out of the risk zone.
What to do if you get sick while traveling? [My pre-travel list]
So, what do we do to prepare ourselves when going on a trip? Well, these are some of the things I do (you can jot down some of the precautions you take before travelling!).
- I check out vaccines that I would need to take based on which country I will be visiting and I make sure to do that vaccine to protect myself. I know some people might have different views about vaccines, but vaccination is a pre-requirement to visit some countries.
- I take health insurance and I tick all possible coverage that I may need, including COVID-19. Or, it can be phrased as an epidemic or pandemic.
- I take my supplements (vitamins, iron tablets, magnesium, etc.) because no matter how much healthy food I eat, sometimes we may not receive adequate nutrients from out food.
- I visit the pharmacy and enquire about pills that can be taken before visiting a country if I have a weak stomach and I am more prone to have indigestion or food poisoning.
- I take essential at-the-counter meds such as Panadol for headaches, eye drops for red eyes, anti-histamine if I have allergies, etc.
- I take extra care of my health days prior to my trip and even include exercising in my routine.
I know this seems like a long list, but I am sure you can add to this list!
Health precautions during the trip
What to do if you get sick while traveling? Once you’re on your journey, it’s crucial to maintain vigilance and take proactive steps to safeguard your health during your travels. Here are some measures to consider:
- Watch What You Eat and Drink: Be mindful of the food and beverages you consume, opting for hygienic options to reduce the risk of stomach illnesses. Additionally, stay hydrated with bottled or properly treated water.
- Prioritize Rest and Recovery: Don’t underestimate the restorative power of adequate sleep. Allow your body the time it needs to recuperate, especially when transitioning between different time zones.
- Stay Active: Engage in light physical activities to promote circulation and overall well-being. Stretching or taking short walks can help alleviate stiffness from prolonged periods of sitting during travel.
- Adapt to Climate Changes: If you’re moving between markedly different climates, take steps to adapt gradually. This might involve adjusting your clothing layers and staying mindful of potential health impacts of drastic temperature shifts.
- Identify Local Medical Facilities: Familiarize yourself with the locations of medical facilities in the areas you’ll be visiting. Knowing where to seek help can be invaluable in the event of a health concern.
Use these tips to handle possible health problems and focus on your well-being during your travels. Remember, being ready and taking action can really help you deal with any unexpected health issues while you’re away.
